Warsaw, Poland became the latest city to feature p Warsaw, Poland became the latest city to feature public art projects that also clean city air, as a giant mural made of special, sun-activated, smog-cleaning pigments was painted by local artists.

Organized by the sportswear company Converse as part of their City-Forests campaign, the mural was produced using photocatalytic paint with titanium dioxide that attracts airborne pollutants before converting them into harmless nitrates through a chemical process involving sunlight.

Through this process the mural reportedly purifies the surrounding air equal to 720 trees, and when the campaign is finished, the murals spread across several countries should be doing the work of 3,000.

The mural was erected on a building facing a popular metro stop and features a collection of smiling flowers entangled among high rise buildings. Polish artists Maciek Polak and Dawid Ryski designed the image, which was executed by the local artist hub Good Looking Studio, involving expert muralists.

Amid the flowers are the words “Create Together For Tomorrow,” a positive message to inspire change, which Converse officials feel will help welcome people who are returning to their daily commutes after periods of COVID-19 isolation.

Looking Good Studio website
“…for the time being everything has slowed down. At Converse we saw this as an opportunity to speak up and help produce fresh air through painting murals,” said a spokesman.

A global movement
After Bangkok in Thailand, Warsaw represents the second city to finish a mural, among 13 set to erect the City-Forests murals—Belgrade, Lima, Sydney, Jakarta, Manila, Sao Paulo, Santiago, Johannesburg, Melbourne, Bogota, and Panama City.

Looking Good Studio website
However, Converse is not the only ones using these special paints to clean the air. Dutch designer Studio Roosegaarde erected a series of billboards in Monterrey, Mexico, which use the same photocatalytic paint as the artwork in Warsaw.

Each billboard there generates the same amount of clean air as 30 trees every 6 hours—and it can function for up to five years.

On August 13, 1955, Lamar Smith, 63-year-old farmer and WWI veteran, was shot dead in cold blood on the crowded courthouse lawn in Brookhaven, Mississippi, for urging African Americans to vote in a local run-off election. No one was prosecuted.
.
.
Smith, a locally known voting rights advocate affiliated with the Regional Council of Negro Leadership, had been threatened and warned to stop trying to register and organize African American voters in the community. These threats were realized when Smith was murdered on the courthouse lawn in front of dozens of witnesses, including Sheriff Robert E. Case, who permitted one of the alleged assailants to leave the crime scene covered in blood. Days later, that man and two others were arrested in connection with the shooting. All three suspects were white.
.
.
In September 1955, a grand jury composed of 20 white men declined to indict the three suspects for murder after witnesses failed to come forward to testify.
.
.
Following the grand jury’s report, District Attorney E. C. Barlow criticized the lack of witness cooperation and complained about the sheriff’s handling of the case. Despite Barlow’s public promises to proceed with the investigation, the criminal case against the three suspects was dismissed. No one was punished for the crime.
.

Smith’s death was one of several racially-motivated killings in Mississippi that year, including the May 1955 murder of civil rights leader Rev. George Lee in Belzoni; the abduction and murder of Emmett Till in the Mississippi Delta in August 1955; and the fatal shooting of Gus Courts in Belzoni in December 1955. Then they admit they made a mistake with the license plate. The SUV and the family had NOTHING to do with the stolen motorcycle. ⁣#evokechange

One of the most crucial provisions of the last coronavirus relief act was to provide an extra $600 weekly increase in unemployment benefits to the tens of millions of Americans who are currently out of work. Unemployment is at historic levels.
Unemployed workers need extra assistance during the pandemic.

🔥After protestors tore down the statue of Edward Colston, they tossed it in the harbor where it belongs. ⁣

Edward Colston was a monster who bought, sold, and traded Africans, human beings, and forced them into slavery until they died. Nobody who did this should be honored. It was/is terrorism. Now. Then. ⁣

He never should’ve had a statue. ⁣

I’m proud of the activists and organizers in Bristol, in the United Kingdom, who tore this down. ⁣

TEAR THEM ALL DOWN. Everywhere. ⁣

I support this.

On this day, 31 May 1927, Fred Trump, the father of US president Donald Trump, was arrested at a rally of the Ku Klux Klan in Queens, New York.
He was initially arrested for "refusing to disperse" along with six other people after the rally descended into disorder. The Long Island Daily Press reported that all seven arrestees were wearing Klan robes.
After Donald Trump was endorsed by David Duke, the former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, Trump was questioned about his father's arrest. Donald claimed to journalist Jason Horowitz that "it never happened", despite it being reported in several newspapers. When Horowitz asked Trump if the address reported for his father in the newspapers, 175-24 Devonshire Rd, was accurate, Donald dismissed it as "totally false". However Fred Trump's wedding announcement in the Daily Press listed his address at 175-24 Devonshire Rd.
Fred Trump was subjected to legal action by the Justice Department on multiple occasions for racist behaviour as a landlord, and one of his former tenants, folk singer Woody Guthrie once wrote in a song mentioning Trump: "I suppose / Old Man Trump knows / Just how much / Racial Hate / He stirred up".

INTROSPECTIVE magazine presents. Inside the Bubble of Melvin Sokolsky

Sokolsky dreamed the impossible and helped revolutionize the art of fashion photography during the heady 1960s. At the time, this was a radical concept, and he pushed the idea to the limit in his groundbreaking 1963 “Bubble” series for Harper’s Bazaar, in which models donning elegant couture were suspended in a Plexiglas bubble over Paris. The series has now come to New York’s Staley-Wise Gallery as part of “The Paris Pictures.” On display through April 16, the show includes signed prints ranging from On the Seine, Paris, 1963, in which a fetching couture-clad model skims over the river in a bubble, to Sokolsky, Make Dalí Fly, Paris, 1965, a group of contact sheets showing Salvador Dalí visiting Sokolsky’s set in Paris. Facing demands more than twice the normal size — feeding 120,000 per week instead of 58,000 — Cooper has said he fears the Food Bank could run through its inventory in less than a month.

Reacting to the photos, Rep. Ina Minjarez, D-San Antonio, and Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, D-San Antonio, quickly gathered Bexar County’s state legislative delegation for a video conference with Cooper. The delegation includes Zaffirini, one of the highest-ranking legislators in the Texas Senate, and Sen. Jose Menendez, D-San Antonio, who went personally to the Food Bank office. “I woke up this morning to speak to our senators and congressmen and City Council. Every elected official is on it,” Cooper said. “And they are like, ‘We saw the picture. We understand now. What can we be doing to help?’…The level of urgency and the need was captured (in those photographs).#coronalife #evoketheconversation #evoke #lifeinquarantine #foodbanks @sanantonioexpress

Cory McAbee's 2001 release of "The American Astronaut". This is a low-budget sci-fi film like you have never seen. WILD……..The cover art is only a taste of the texture of what McAbee created. Love the risk taken to bring you to a place studio heads couldn’t see for the life of them, you need not judge for once and just take it in for what it is. Kind of Tom Waits of a film. Have to find a way to show this in EVOKE.
